Marty Makary
Dr. Makary is a professor of public health and health policy at Johns Hopkins, and an active surgeon specializing in cancer. Dr. Makary appears as a regular medical guest commentator on CNN and Fox News, discussing a wide variety of general health and public policy issues. His research expertise includes societal health trends, high-risk populations, cancer, health policy, injury prevention, medical mistakes, and the evaluation of hospital quality and safety.
Dr. Makary is the author of over 100 scientific research articles and several books, including a leading textbook of surgery used in U.S. medical schools standard curricula. He speaks nationally on "Navigating the U.S. Healthcare System", "What Changes to Expect in the U.S. Healthcare System", "Going Green with Everyday Health, Food, and Lifestyle Choices".
Dr. Makary served as a surrogate for the Barack Obama Health Plan during the Obama Presidential Campaign.
Dr. Makary is internationally recognized for having pioneered minimally-invasive operations and the novel description of risk reduction strategies in healthcare. In 2007, he was named the Mark Ravitch Endowed Chair of General Surgery at Johns Hopkins, becoming (at age 36) the youngest surgeon in the U.S. to receive an endowed chair in medicine.
Dr. Makary is the recipient of numerous research and teaching awards, including the Research Award of the Washington Academy of Surgery and the Best Teacher Award for Georgetown Medical School. His research has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine and The New York Times, and he has served as an invited visiting professor at several leading U.S. universities.
Dr. Makary holds degrees from Harvard University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Bucknell University. He completed general surgical training at Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University.
